How to wash a down sleeping bag

Your down sleeping bag is more than just a piece of gear—it’s your warm and trusty companion on every adventure. Keeping it clean and properly maintained is the key to preserving its performance and lifespan. Ready to learn the ropes? Here’s how to care for your sleeping bag like a pro.

Washing your down sleeping bag

When it’s finally time for a wash, handwashing is your safest bet—here’s how:

  1. Skip the dry-cleaning: Solvents can damage the down and compromise your bag’s performance.

  1. Prep the bag: Secure all zippers and Velcro tabs.

  1. Fill your bath: Add 150 mm of warm water and a pure, mild soap, detergent, or Granger’s Down Wash.

  1. Massage gently: Submerge your bag and massage water into it using light pressure from your hands. Avoid lifting the bag—it’s heavy when wet, and the down may tear.

  1. Let it soak: Leave your bag to soak for 1–4 hours, depending on how dirty it is.

  1. Rinse thoroughly: Drain the tub, refill with fresh water, and massage the bag until no suds remain.

  1. Press out water: Fold the ends of the semi-dry bag toward the center and press firmly to expel moisture.

Drying your down sleeping bag

Drying your bag is just as important as washing:

  1. Air-dry first: Lay the bag flat on towels spread over portable racks to release excess water.

  1. Optional tumble dry: Use a dryer on low heat—but beware of excess heat, which can damage the fabric.

  1. Dry in the shade: Avoid direct sunlight to protect the shell fabric from UV degradation. A warm, windy day is ideal for air-drying.

Tips for ongoing sleeping bag care

To keep your sleeping bag performing like new:

  • Store smart: Use the large cotton storage sack provided to maintain loft, and only use the stuff sack or compression sack during transit. Always force the bag into the sack with your fist—no rolling or folding!

  • Loft it up: When you reach your destination, lay out your sleeping bag to let it fully loft for better insulation.

  • Keep it dry: Moisture reduces loft and affects insulation, so air out your sleeping bag whenever possible and ensure it’s completely dry before storing.

  • Spot clean: Reduce full washes by using a liner and spot cleaning marks with a damp cloth.

With proper care and attention, your down sleeping bag will stay fresh, cozy, and adventure-ready for years to come. Wherever you’re headed, make sure your sleeping bag is prepped to keep you snug on every journey.
