5 reasons why autumn is the best time for camping

Autumn's magnificent hues of gold, burnt orange, and fiery red make it one of the most magical times of year to go camping. With the right gear, you can pitch your tent in any season, but here's why we think autumn is the best time of year for setting up camp.

1. MILD WEATHER AND STUNNING SCENERY

Deciduous trees - need we say more? Not only is the scenery vibrant, but the weather is typically more settled during Autumn - as most places enjoy less wind, and less rain during this season. Plus, it's generally not too hot or not too cold. These cooler temperatures are ideal for outdoorsy pursuits, as there's less risk of overheating.

2. COOL NIGHTS AND LONG SLEEPS

The sun and temperature tend to soar early on summer days, but in autumn the crisp morning air and late sunrises mean you’re less likely to be woken by a sweltering tent, and more likely to sleep in longer. Waking up after a good night’s sleep to the sound of birds chirping and spectacular autumnal views, cup of tea in hand, has to be one of the best possible ways to start a day. Ever.

3. CAMPGROUNDS AREN’T BOOKED OUT

Popular campsites are usually booked up well in advance during summer, but in autumn spontaneous camping adventures are easier to organise. Plus, fewer people at your camping ground means you are more likely to get a bigger, quieter, and more secluded site with the best view.

4. FEWER CRITTERS AT CAMP

Insects generally retreat over the colder months. There are fewer mosquitoes, flies and sandflies - so if bugs put you off the outdoors, autumn is the time to venture out.

5. YOU CAN (probably) HAVE A CAMPFIRE

One of the best things about camping is sitting around the campfire with good people and good food. In autumn the temperatures are cooler and the threat of forest fires is lower. It’s also cool enough to rug up with a blanket and warm layers under the stars and by the crackling fire — the epitome of snug. Make sure you check fire restrictions at your campground before lighting a fire.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED FOR CAMPING IN AUTUMN

  • It all starts with a proper three/four season tent(/shop).
  • A decent camping mat or airbed(/camp-and-hike/sleeping-gear.html) to provide an extra layer of warmth and comfort between you and the cold, hard ground.
  • Check the warmth rating on your sleeping bag(/camp-and-hike/sleeping-gear/sleeping-bags.html) to make sure it will keep you snug — but not overheated — for camping in autumn temperatures.
  • Remember to pack torches and head lights(/camp-and-hike/lighting-and-power.html). The sun sets earlier in autumn, so you’ll be spending more time around camp in the dark.

HOW TO DRESS FOR AUTUMN

When it comes to dressing for an autumn hike, layering is key. Here are some clothing items to consider:

  • Base laye(/shop)r: A moisture-wicking base layer will help keep you dry and comfortable by wicking away sweat from your skin.
  • Insulating layer(/shop): A fleece or down jacket will provide warmth and insulation against the chilly air.
  • Outer layer(/shop): A waterproof and breathable jacket will protect you from the elements.
  • Accessories(/shop): A warm hat, gloves, and a scarf will help keep your head, hands, and neck warm.
