Zeolite Trail Running Vest – Gear Review by Turia Pitt, Kathmandu Ambassador

I wore the 2018 version of this bad boy in the Coast to Coast NZ - up hill and down dale, through rivers, bashing through bush and fighting off Orcs it absolutely held its own and then some.  Comfortable AND practical - why can’t all items of clothing be like that?!

When I spied the 2019 release of the Zeolite vest I was stoked… I mean, can you improve on a masterpiece?  Apparently so. Kathmandu have added improved access to pockets so it’s easier to get in the right compartment and find your kit. Looking down whilst digging through pockets when you’re hopping over rocks and tree branches could spell face plant, so big tick from me on the easy access.  The fabric has had a speccy new addition - POLYGIENE… basically inbuilt vest deodorant - bonus!  Kathmandu advise ‘use more, wash less’ with Polygiene – aka winning! Trail running and even bush walking in our climate can be a sweaty business, so it’s nice to know your vest is keeping you smelling fine along the way.  Like most Kathmandu products this has been designed with common sense - and I LOVE that stuff.  When you’re trail running you really need to rely on your own resources - it’s self-sufficiency all the way. So, having a vest that chips in on that front makes this an indispensable piece of equipment.  Super effort Kathmandu!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great to wear while walking or running Fantastic but for one thing the two water bottles included tend to leak a bit and have to be really screwed tight to prevent this and with time may be cross threaded

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super Comfy Vest Picked this vest up for my longer runs where I needed to carry some water, calories, and additional gear. Vest is very comfortable with no pressure point or chafing to date and the vest comforms really well so it's rock solid when running and stays put. I originally bought a larger size but exchanged to a medium to make better use of the adjustment range on the straps. The material on the back pack is nice and stretchy allowing you to stuff lots of kit in the pack plus there is plenty of storage on the shoulder straps/soft flask packets. Haven't bothered washing it yet but the laundry bag is a nice touch!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome running asset! I'm so glad I got this! It's perfect for all my running essentials, especially on longer runs and especially great at this time of year to hold my jumper once I've warmed up a bit. Plenty of space and great accessible pockets for my jumper, phone, keys, gels, etc. Great having the option to fit a water bladder or the bottles that come with the vest. So far, I've been using the bottles and finding them good, though I suspect they are a tad flimsy, so may have to move to the bladder soon...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Vest- What an upgrade This vest was my first exploration into running 'vests'- I was previously using and familiar with other hydrations systems, which had more of a 'pack' design to them. First impression was how soft and malleable the running vest was. Compared to my old pack which had the typical supportive design with almost a board running up my back to distribute weight evenly, I was initially struck by (and perhaps concerned by) how this vest felt- without any solid structure to it at all- much like a hoodie or sweatshirt. I was concerned that the contents could push into my back, shift around or bunch up, or just be generally unsupported and uncomfortable on my back, especially over 5+ hour runs. That said, I was also really impressed by the flasks on the front pockets, the option to carry a bladder, and how soft the material felt compared to my previous pack. As it turned out, my concerns were completely unfounded. The pack, in many dozens of hours of trail running, has not given me so much as a single issue. It is lightweight, comfortable and roomy and stretchy enough to fit a surprising amount of kit (ie. polypro top and bottoms, waterproof pants and jacket, first aid kit, mid-layer top, 2 litres in bladder, body glide, beanie and gloves, phone, keys, gels, bars and bladders in front). The kit does not chafe or dig into my back. It doesn't make me feel sweaty or hot on my back like my old pack did. Others have noted the storage pockets on front not being adequate or useful. Whilst I understand what they mean in terms of not all having zips or closures, I don't believe they need them- using this pack for the mountain run of the Kathmandu Coast to Coast I fitted (along the strap pockets only) 5 Clif bars, 6 gels, a GoPro, my cell phone, and two flasks with 600ml water in each. I stuck the gels into the open ended pockets where they hung out but never once came close to falling out, so it doesn't seem to be an issue. I should also note that carrying all this was completely comfortable to do and not bulky or unnatural at all, the vest remained in place and didn't slosh or move around. That sums up the vest quite well I think- you never feel like it is there at all. Cleaning is simple in the washing machine every half a dozen runs, the material has taken some beatings from a few falls and thorns but remains untorn. In summary, couldn't recommend it enough. Whether running for 5km or 50km, I wouldn't leave without this vest.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent option but frustrating and lacking... The Decent: Pretty good pack, has seen me through sand marathons, 2 x 100 km Ultras (Blackall 100 and Glasshouse 100km), plus most weekend long runs. Plenty of storage for water with great storage for a 2ltr bladder and the two 500ml flasks up the front. Good material that doesnt wear down with sweat and small abrasions that can come from running in the forest. Washes up great and some nice internal storage options on the back, perfect for a map or wallet or phone. The Lacking: -Front pocket phone storage. -Deeper/vertical pockets for sturdier gel or food storage -No zippers, Velcro only - where things stored have a chance of falling out. The Frustrating: -Limited lifespan -500ml Flasks are not sold separately. So there is currently no option to replace damaged or lost flasks. Forcing you to buy another brand or just move to another pack. -Fits a small torso better, with a wider torso or larger person will maybe encounter chaffing. -Side storage isnt deep enough for anything substantial (+ no zippers). -Front storage when filled tends to produce bulky and obtuse results. Overall: - It does what other packs can do for similar price. - But it lacks any special features that other brands do well, with no fuss. - Falls short of being a first choice because it just fails to understand the "weekend runner". - No online or in-store options for buying additional Water Flasks. Mine were either lost or damaged. So I ended up just using another pack all together. So whats really the point? 3/5 stars. Overall, i'd recommend this to someone who runs for a few hours on a weekend and is eyeing off a Ultramarathon or something similar. Not great for camping with or hiking for long periods.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lite and comfortable I've ben training with the Zeolite Running Vest for the last 3 months in the lead up to Coast to Coast and what an amazing piece of equipment. For me I wanted something that doest bounce up and down while I'm running and this thing hits the mark bang on. It also has the capacity to hold all my mandatory gear as well as loads of easily accessible nutrition. Thanks Kathmandu for nailing it in the run vest game!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Need more work on... Bought this pack high expectations but had to returned it since bottle was leaking. Maybe it was just one off faulty manufacturing product but I was really disappointed on a few things since I really wanted to stick to the brand which I grew up with. Fit was great with lots of pockets and adjustable straps. But you guys really need to ditch the velcro. They were so hard to take them off while I wearing it on my back and it was quite painful when they scratched my skins. Need to re-design the packs to avoid velcro. I have been using 4,5 different big brands vests but never seen anyone using velcro any more. Please bring us better version next time which I can proudly wear it out in race day ;-)
