Kathmandu is the proud sponsor of New Zealand's most iconic race

Held annually in February, the Kathmandu Coast to Coast starts on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island at Kumara Beach, crossing the main divide and finishing on the East Coast in Christchurch.

About the Kathmandu Coast to Coast

Competitors begin on foot at Kumara Beach, running 3km inland to their waiting bikes. They ride along the Taramakau River to the foothills of the Southern Alps, and then switch their bikes for running shoes.

The following 33km run is mainly off-trail, with the rocky riverbed the only direct line up the valley. Competitors cross multiple rivers and gain an elevation of around 800m on their way to Goat Pass, and the start of the descent. With the best run times taking around three hours, this section is as much a test of coordination and strength as it is outright speed.

A 15km road bike ride follows, then it’s a kayak down the mighty Waimakariri River. The river section is, for many, the highlight and the crux of the race; it’s 70kms of braids through a stunning gorge.

The water flows swiftly in places and mixes long calm sections with up to grade 2 rapids. It takes competitors from the heart of the Southern Alps out on the Canterbury Plains to the finish line on the East Coast at the New Brighton Pier, where a vibrant beachside festival awaits.

'One Day' athletes complete the distance in one day, while the majority of competitors take two days to cover the course – spending a night camping at the end of the mountain run section.

The Kathmandu Coast to Coast is an offical Leave No Trace event.
