Rated 1 out of 5 by from Died very young This mat was only 12mths old and failed catastrophically while on the Kokoda Track. The seemingly indestructible brass screw-type air-valve failed to hold air - the mat deflated in seconds. The valve being a press-sealed unit, any repair on-the-fly was impossible. I couldn't be bothered returning it under ACL 2011 for a refund. The damage has been done. It failed when I needed it most - on the track. I trusted a Kathmandu product would be at least reasonable quality. So disappointing. Steer well clear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfortable and really lightweight. I bought this for our daughter to take to a uni volunteer camp. It was really comfortable and yet light to carry, so perfect for her needs.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So comfy! We used two of these on our recent trip around the Rhodope Mountains in Bulgaria. When we arrived in camp we'd just unscrew the valve and leave it to inflate itself. Later when we turned in for the night, we'd blow a bit more air in and close the valve, and voila! Easiest bed I've ever made. I always have trouble with my back using camping mats but not with this one - perfect depth to keep me from getting a sore back. My only warning is that it takes up a lot of room in your pack if you're backpacking, it doesn't fold down very small. So take that into account when planning what else you'll carry!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very comfy sleeping mat Very comfortable for sleeping on any surface. Is a little bit short for me still at 1.87m (if you want both feet and head on the mat) but a self-inflating pillow solved that problem. Only reason it's not a 5 star is because it's the most time consuming in setting up/storing when camping. It's hard to manually inflate quickly and requires some strength to roll up again. Takes more effort than rolling up a sleeping bag or simple tent and also takes the most space but the comfort is worth it. Would buy again.

How do I know if it's fully inflated? As it hasn't changed much?

Asked by: Tempest85
The thickness of the mat should measure at 38mm when it is fully inflated

I've recently bought this mat and before I take it out I've inflated it to check. All went well with inflation. I turned the cap to deflate and left it overnight to deflate and it didn't deflate. What am I missing here? How do I deflate? Thanks.

Asked by: Rarawa
Hi there, so to deflate this mat you need to open the valve and then roll the mat up. This will push out any air and the once fully rolled do the valve back up to stop any air inflating the mat again. This is not a self deflating mat, it needs a bit of help.

Can I wash the ascent hiking mat in the washing machine?

Asked by: Koula 123
No we do not recommend washing this mat in the washing machine. The care instructions for this mat are as follows: Brush off any loose dirt Spot clean in warm water Use mild detergent only Do not bleach Air dry out of direct sunlight Do not iron Do not dry clean Always check the ground for sharp objects before using mat Do not leave mat in a hot location or in direct sunlight Heat may cause mat to over-inflate resulting in potential damage Do not use pressurised pumps to inflate Keep out of contact with sunscreen insect repellent and camping fuels as they may cause damage Store mattress in a dry location unrolled with valve open

how does it actually inflat ?

Asked by: Ascent 3B
Mat is self-inflating, meaning a turn of the black valve allows air to rush in and fill the foam inner core. The Hike 38mm Mat is fast filing with its high pile and inner coring and cut outs which allow air to pass through filing very corner of the mat quickly. The inner coring and cut outs are key to fast deflation also, however we always recommend not rushing deflation to protect the outer layer coming away from the foam inner.
