Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb jacket I’ve worn this a few times now in the pouring rain, and took it with me when I went hiking in the Ruahines recently. The jacket repels water beautifully and the underarm zips are a great feature. I was able to climb some very steep hills and remain dry and warm. The pockets are really good, although it takes a while to get used to top-opening pockets on the front of the jacket. It is quite large for its sizing so I can wear multiple thick layers underneath it. All in all, I couldn’t be happier with it. It costs a bomb but it’s worth it if you spend a lot of time outdoors.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Definitely keeps you dry no matter what I received an XT Alopex jacket from "Kathmandu" last year preparing for my 3-month trekking trip to Nepal and India. It's an impressive piece of clothing that has proved to be highly functional and completely weatherproof (tested by the craziest weather in Nepal and India). Weather Protection - 10/10 Completely weatherproof! I wore it in an infamous wind tunnel of Kaligandaki river in Mustang, in a hail storm in Ladakh, India, while trekking up to a 5800 m pass and on regular rainy days while trekking in Nepal. Breathability - 9/10 GORE-TEX fabric this jacket is made of is extremely breathable (also the third layer is very helpful in redistributing the moisture). Sometimes it would become quite hot during some intense trekking but the underarm vent zips were really helpful. Mobility - 7/10 The jacket is a bit crinkly but I guess it will change with time. I'd really like some change in a front zipper as it is a bit too stiff for my liking. Also, I can't call the front pockets backpack-friendly (anything you put there, be it a phone or a beanie, will end up on the bottom of the pockets and pressed against your hips with a backpack belt) and easy to reach in (I think could be changed by repositioning the pockets diagonally). Features - 8/10 The front zipper is made of plastic, it's quite stiff and hard to move, can be pretty frustrating when your fingers are frozen and you can't zip the jacket up. However, the zippers in the front pockets, side pockets, and underarm vents run smoothly as they are made of a different material. The jacket has got plenty of pockets that can fit anything from an energy bar or keys to a wallet, beanie or a smartphone. Features like a cloth to wipe your glasses or your phone, a little keyring inside one of the pockets or a pocket on one of the sleeves plus useful details like a chinguard actually make this jacket a very well-thought-out piece of adventure clothing. Weight and compression - 10/10 The jacket is extremely lightweight, packs well and doesn't take much space in a backpack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My new favourite jacket! I got this jacket about a year ago but have only just recently had the chance to give it a good workout. I work as a full time travel photographer and I'm always in different temperatures and environments. This year the Alopex came with me to Patagonia and it was the best thing ever. It's a shell so it's perfect for hiking, I can strip layers off or add them underneath but stay dry and protected with this jacket on. It also has loads of pockets, which I stuffed with snacks, spare batteries, beanie and neck warmer, gloves, tissues and anything else I needed to access easily on the trails.

What's the benefit of RECCO?

Asked by: Maz4
The RECCO® technology is a two-part system, featuring an active detector, carried by the rescuer, and a passive reflector, carried by the user. The RECCO reflector makes you searchable to the rescuers. RECCO reflectors are lightweight passive transponders which require no power or activation to function. They consist of a diode and an antenna. How it works: 1. The RECCO detector emits a directional radar signal, like the beam of a flashlight. 2. When the radar signal hits the RECCO reflector, it is echoed back to the detector and points the rescuer in the direction of the victim. 3. The closer the detector gets to the reflector the stronger the returned-signal, ultimately allowing the rescuer to pinpoint the victim's location.

What's the breathability rating for this jacket? E.g MVTR: 20,000g/24hours

Asked by: Joe22
As this jacket is made from Gore-Tex, they have a slightly different breathability scale called a RET scale. On this scale this jacket is =<6m²Pa/W. On this scale the lower the number the better the breathability. <6 equates to very good or extremely breathable - comfortable at a higher activity rate.
