Customer Reviews

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great play tent for the kids if it doesn't rain! I bought this for my kids for Christmas, and things being what they are, I didn't have a chance to set it up and actually use it for a couple months. I live in Dunedin, so when I did finally see a 3-day window without rain (metservice and weatherwatch agreed) I went for it and set this up in the back yard. It's easy enough to set up, make sure you use all the stakes and guy lines, but don't stake down the tent corners until after you've got the poles in place (that's a pro tip). Convenient front and rear entrances, nice big vestibule out front and decent size in the rear as well. The front rain fly zipper is a bit awkward when you're inside, because you zip it all the way to the ground if you want to flip it outside to keep the condensation outside the vestibule for entering and exiting - and you have to stretch way down into a narrow gap to reach the zipper when you're inside - so you'll get a bit of condensation on your back unless you're a really flexible gymnast type. The front door is also a bit awkward on the right side, as the top centre pole end pulls the tent tight at that point and you have to pull it inward to zip the door closed and avoid ripping it. I'm not super confident the stitching and fabric will stand up to frequent use - pretty flimsy feeling and quite a few thread ends left exposed - but so far nothing has pulled loose (three setups and teardowns so far). Lots of mesh for good ventilation, and the fly keeps it from getting too cold (we camped down to 8C, so not very cold). There's a neat little velcro vent at the top rear of the fly that should help to keep the condensation down - this and the "windows" can only be accessed from outside, so plan ahead. The fly offers full coverage, but it sags in enough places that it WILL touch the tent. For anyone who has camped seriously before, this should be an obvious deal breaker, because if the fly touches the tent, water will eventually wick through and you'll wake up in a puddle. Fortunately, in our experiment the rain only started at 6am, and we managed to decamp to the house before the heavy rain came. An hour later when I went out to start disassembling things for drying, I found the fly resting against the tent mesh in several places. There was rain dripping into the tent in one spot right near the centre of the roof. Adjusting the guy lines and resetting the rain fly just shifted the points of contact. Maybe I got a bum tent kit, maybe this is a standard issue with the Retreat 80. But I'll be asking for a full refund, you can't sell a tent in New Zealand and expect it will only work in perfectly dry weather. The picture shows one of the places where the fly contacts the tent itself, this one caused wicking that resulted in an inside puddle after a pretty solid - but brief - Dunedin rain. The larger patch below is fine, that's the window and any wicking should run down the inside of the fly and onto the ground outside the tent.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good size space I bought this for my teenager after seeing my friend's son in the same tent. Little tent but with plenty of floorspace and bigger height than most little dome tents making it easier to get dressed. Their feedback was that it withstood a decent hosing after camping too. Looking forward to testing it out this summer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to put up I bought this just after Christmas and have used it once so far. It was easy to put up and down with two people but would have been possible for one person too. It has windows and mosquito nets and the quality is good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So easy to put up. Used once in calm conditions, looking forward to testing it further. Pleased I bought the 80 as it gives you more space for 2 people. Would be a tight squeeze with 3.
