New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC) is a leading authority on outdoor safety information and training in New Zealand. Formed in 1966 in response to the increasing number of mountain and bush incidents, MSC now has 17 member organisations, nine advisory committees, 28 branches nationwide, and a pool of over 1,000 instructors from a volunteer base of 1,500+.
MSC’s instructors share their outdoor skills and knowledge with the community, through public courses on abseil, alpine, avalanche, bushcraft, firearms, Hunter National Training Scheme (HUNTS), outdoor first aid, outdoor leader, risk management, and river safety.
A range of manuals, pamphlets, posters and DVDs are produced by MSC, providing valuable outdoor safety information for schools, youth organisations, outdoor organisations, and individuals.
MSC aims to:
- Enable people to enjoy their recreation safely in the outdoors
- Foster positive community support for outdoor safety
- Promote the development and maintenance of national outdoor safety standards for land-based activities.
